When is 'The Matrix'?Posted 5 Nov 2003 at 20:58 UTC by steve
We all know the answer to the question, "What is the Matrix?" but with
the release of Matrix
Revolutions, some people are speculating on the question "When is
the Matrix?". Using dates found or hinted at in all three movies and the
Animatrix short films, a complete
timeline has been pieced together. From the first humanoid robots
sometime after 2010, to their revolt and eventual victory over the
armies of man in 2098, the timeline tells the whole story of AI and robots
vs man.
I thought the first Matrix movie had occured at about year 2498 or so.
It seems a little too close at 2100-2200 for these events to have
ocurred.
But maybe I wasn't listening too well all those times I watched the
first movie. I'll have to watch it again to see what Morpheus was
saying to Neo when he was showing the contruct.

Judging by the costumes, imagary and storyline I would guess that the
matrix is somewhere around 1986. Take the attention to visual detail
of 2001, the panoptican matrix of Dr Who, add some hacking "us against
them" type elements from War Games and the fear of mechanical takeover
from the original Terminator then stir with a generous helping of
Neuromancer and you've pretty much got The Matrix.
